Critics Consensus: It follows as many genre conventions as it mocks, but Isn't It Romantic is a feel-good rom-com with some satirical bite -- and a star well-suited for both.

Unlike other movies where women bang their heads, this one's got a brain.
While [Wilson] has a delightful mix of spirit and cynicism that makes her an ideal comic presence for the Internet age, I found myself wishing the film took better advantage of her gifts.
It's the Inception of rom-coms. Sort of.
Though the movie's tropes have been written about or spoofed before in funnier films like They Came Together, this breezy take has heart and a clever resolution.
Comic tornado Rebel Wilson lifts up this meta-take on romantic comedies and makes it your best bet for a Valentine's date at the movies. Too bad about the sucker punch of a happy ending.
[A] visually and verbally ingenious sendup of romantic comedies that wears its candy heart on its sleeve.
Fueled by Rebel Wilson's deadpan irony, the thorny path to true love takes just enough unexpected twists (and jabs) to keep the proceedings fresh by keeping us all in on the joke.
[The film was] clearly made by people who love the genre. Its satire is self-aware but not mean-spirited. It doesn't ridicule its audience for wanting to watch rom-coms, it simply demonstrates how one can love something yet still recognizes its faults.
While it may not be bold, it's still funny.
Isn't It Romantic could have been a satiric takedown. It could have been a love letter. Instead, it's a little bit of both, a snarkily-written, yet sincere expression of affection.
The script is packed with witty touches, but nothing can divert attention from the predictability of the story.
Much like the rom-coms Isn't It Romantic skewers and celebrates, it succeeds because it recognizes we're all suckers for sincerity, even as it takes pains to update message for a more empowering one that cynics and romantics alike can embrace.
